The Council like all businesses is being affected by the current recession. It is facing a fall in income from the things it does which bring in money such as charging for parking and renting properties. It is also faced with an increased demand for the services it provides to people affected by the recession such as processing more benefit claims and helping house more people.

Balancing the budget for 2010/11 is hard due to the recession but has been made worse by the impact of the free bus pass scheme for the over 60s. The principle of free travel for older people is great but the £2 million shortfall in government funding for the scheme isn’t.

Given all the pressures, the Council is faced with needing to save between £1million and £2million from its budget.

We are asking you to tell us where you think those savings should be made.
